How much does it cost to register a trademark in Argentina?
Last verified: 27 Oct 2026 · Status: Changing
Short answer. INPI charges 100 UMAPI per class to file a trademark with up to 20 goods or services, plus 4 UMAPI per extra item. The official annex prices 100 UMAPI at ARS 36,000 (about US$23), but the UMAPI is CPI adjusted monthly, so October 2026 is higher. There is no separate grant fee. Agent fees are extra.
As of 26 Oct 2026. Rules in force at that date.
Key rules
- Fees are set by INPI, not by the law. Law 22.362 fixes no amounts. Filings are subject to the fees INPI sets (Decree 242/2019 Annex art. 10), and a filing without the fee is treated as not filed (art. 47).
- Current schedule. INPI Res. 75/2026 (BO 20 Mar 2026) updated all fees from 1 April 2026 and expressed them in UMAPI. Its annex was replaced in full by INPI Res. 78/2026 art. 2 (BO 26 Mar 2026). Infoleg lists no later change to Res. 75/2026.
- The UMAPI. Its starting value is one hundredth of the one class trademark filing fee (Res. 75/2026 art. 3), printed in the annex as ARS 360. From 1 May 2026 it moves monthly with the INDEC consumer price index, and INPI publishes the updated value on its procedures portal (arts. 5 and 6).
- Trademark items in the annex. New application with up to 20 nomenclator positions: 100 UMAPI (code 110001). Each extra position: 4 UMAPI (code 110100). Optional phonetic search: 22 UMAPI per class (code 141100). Mid term declaration of use: 44 UMAPI (code 181000). Renewal: 200 UMAPI (code 120001). No grant, title or publication fee appears in the trademark section of the annex, even though Law 22.362 art. 12 says publication is "at the applicant's cost" (unconfirmed).
- One class, one fee. Goods and services are classified under the Nice Classification (Decree 242/2019 Annex art. 1), and the fee is defined per class (Res. 75/2026 art. 3). Two classes cost two filing fees.
- Timeline. Since 1 March 2026 INPI examines the application first, then publishes it for one day in the Boletín de Marcas and grants it 30 calendar days later if nobody opposes (INPI Res. 583/2025 arts. 2 and 4). No norm sets a deadline for INPI's examination.
What changes the answer
- More than 20 goods or services in a class: add 4 UMAPI per extra position (code 110100).
- An opposition. The parties get 3 months to settle. If the opponent then pays 500 UMAPI to keep it (code 161000), the applicant pays 50 UMAPI to enter the administrative resolution (code 170000), and the grant waits for the decision (Law 22.362 arts. 15 and 16; INPI FAQ).
- An office objection. Answering a substantive objection within the 30 calendar days is free (code 799991; Decree 242/2019 Annex art. 15), but INPI says you then need a lawyer or agent. A formal objection answer costs 22 UMAPI (code 750001), an extension 50 UMAPI (code 770001).
- Foreign applicant. You must set a special domicile in the City of Buenos Aires (Decree 242/2019 Annex art. 10) and pay through Argentine platforms (INPI FAQ), so in practice you hire a local agent. Recording a power of attorney costs 22 UMAPI (code 480000). Agent fees are not regulated and are not in any source (unconfirmed).
Worked examples
Two founders file one word mark online before launch, in two Nice classes with up to 20 items each. ARS figures are the annex's printed values (1 UMAPI = ARS 360), converted at the dólar MEP rate of ARS 1,563.90 per US$ on 23 Oct 2026 (dólar MEP selling rate (dolarapi.com)) (unconfirmed) (see /data/mep/).
| Step or item | Time | UMAPI | Cost ARS (at 360) | Cost USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free check in the INPI online search module | Day 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Optional INPI phonetic search, 2 classes (code 141100) | Before filing | 44 | 15,840 | 10.13 |
| File 2 applications (code 110001) | Day 0 | 200 | 72,000 | 46.04 |
| Formal and registrability examination | No legal deadline (unconfirmed) | 0 if no objection | 0 | 0 |
| Publication, then opposition window | 1 day plus 30 calendar days | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Grant if unopposed | After day 30 of publication | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Total to grant | 244 | 87,840 | 56.17 |
Step by step. 1. Filing: 2 classes × 100 UMAPI = 200 UMAPI × ARS 360 = ARS 72,000 ÷ 1,563.90 = US$46.04. 2. Search: 2 × 22 UMAPI = 44 UMAPI = ARS 15,840 = US$10.13. 3. Total: 244 UMAPI = ARS 87,840 = US$56.17. 4. Adjust for inflation. Applying BCRA monthly CPI for March to August 2026 (3.4%, 2.6%, 2.1%, 1.9%, 2.1%, 1.7%) to ARS 360 gives about ARS 412.59 per UMAPI for October 2026. This is our estimate, not an INPI figure (unconfirmed). On that basis 244 UMAPI cost about ARS 100,672 (US$64.37).
Keeping it. Trademarks pay no annual fees (INPI FAQ). Between the 5th and 6th year after grant, a declaration of use per registration: 2 × 44 = 88 UMAPI (ARS 31,680, US$20.26 at 360). Renewal at year 10: 2 × 200 = 400 UMAPI (ARS 144,000, US$92.08 at 360) (Law 22.362 arts. 5 and 26).
Cost to do it: 200 UMAPI in official filing fees (ARS 72,000, US$46.04 at the printed value), 244 with the search; no capital; at least one month after a clean examination, total months not fixed by any norm (unconfirmed).
Practical traps
- Quoting old peso amounts. The printed ARS 36,000 applied from 1 April 2026. Since May INPI charges UMAPI times the current value, so check the portal on payment day.
- Relying on INPI to block lookalikes. Since 11 December 2025 INPI no longer raises similar earlier marks, misleading signs, personal names or activity names on its own motion; only third parties raise them by opposition (Res. 583/2025 arts. 1 and 3). A cheap search before filing matters more now.
- Forgetting the mid term declaration. Missing it adds 22 UMAPI per year of delay (code 182000) and blocks renewal until filed (Decree 242/2019 Annex art. 26).
FAQ
Can I file without an agent? Yes, online, but INPI says you need a lawyer or agent to answer a substantive objection.
How long is the registration valid? Ten years from grant, renewable indefinitely if the mark was used in the 5 years before each expiry (Law 22.362 art. 5).
Can I use the mark before grant? Use is not prohibited, but rights come only with registration (Law 22.362 art. 4). INPI suggests waiting at least 30 days after publication to see if anyone opposes.
Do SMEs get a discount on trademark fees? No. The 50% and 60% discounts in the annex (codes 309001 to 309003) cover patent and utility model items only.
