What is Argentina's digital nomad visa, and how do I apply?
Last verified: 27 Oct 2026 · Status: Changing
Short answer. Argentina's "digital nomad visa" is a transitory residence of up to 180 days, renewable once, for nationals of visa exempt countries who work remotely for employers or clients abroad (DNM Disposition 758/2022). Apply online from abroad through the DNM's TIE 24H system, or in person at Migraciones once inside Argentina. There is no minimum income.
As of 26 Oct 2026. Rules in force at that date.
Key rules
The residence was created by DNM Disposition 758/2022 of the National Directorate of Migration (DNM), published in the Boletín Oficial on 11 May 2022 and in force ten calendar days later (art. 5). It uses the "special reasons" transitory subcategory of Migration Law 25.871 art. 24 h). Infoleg lists no norm that amends it (Disposition 758/2022 text, Infoleg record). The commonly cited "Disposición DNM 1/2022" was not checked; every DNM nomad page cites 758/2022 (unconfirmed).
- Who (art. 1): nationals of countries that need no tourist visa for Argentina, working remotely for individuals or companies domiciled abroad. Employees and freelancers both fit (art. 2 d)). No minimum income is set.
- Length (arts. 1 and 3): up to 180 days, extendable once for the same term. To extend you need income receipts for the period, an Argentine criminal record certificate and at least 50% physical presence in Argentina during the first term.
- Documents (art. 2): signed application with a short CV, valid passport, photo, proof of activity with one professional reference, and the fee. Foreign documents must be apostilled and translated into Spanish by an Argentine sworn translator (DNM nomad page).
- How to apply. From abroad: online through the TIE 24H system; approval arrives by email and you show it at the border. Inside Argentina: in person, not through RaDEx, in the DNM's own words (by email appointment in Buenos Aires City, at the local DNM office elsewhere).
- Fees (Decree 584/2024 art. 1; DNM fee table): 1 UMSM = ARS 1,000 (art. 2). Tourist to "special reasons" switch: 100 UMSM (line h)). Extension of an art. 24 h) residence: 40 UMSM non Mercosur, 20 UMSM Mercosur (line g)). From abroad: 120 consular units plus a consular fee (line f) III). Disposition 758/2022 cites the repealed Decree 231/2009; the mapping follows identical lettering (unconfirmed).
- Limits. No DNI (DNM residences page) and no work for Argentine payers (Law 25.871 art. 52).
- Tax. Work done in Argentina is Argentine source income, whoever pays (Income Tax Law art. 5). A foreigner becomes tax resident after 12 months "with temporary authorisations" (art. 116 b)). Whether transitory nomad months count is unresolved.
What changes the answer
- Nationality. Visa nationals cannot use this residence at all. Mercosur nationals can, but the two year Mercosur temporary residence (with DNI) usually suits them better.
- Applying from abroad. TIE 24H replaces the 100 UMSM switch with 120 consular units plus a consular fee, amounts not in the sources (unconfirmed).
- Total stay near 12 months. Tourist time plus 360 nomad days can reach 13 months. If those months count under ITL art. 116 b), residence starts on the first day of the next month and worldwide income becomes taxable.
- Argentine clients. Any work for Argentine payers falls outside the residence (Law 25.871 arts. 52 and 53 d)); you need a temporary worker residence.
Worked examples
A US citizen paid US$6,000 a month (ARS 9,383,400) by a US employer enters as a tourist, switches to nomad in month 1 and extends once. Pesos are converted at the dólar MEP rate of ARS 1,563.90 per US$ on 23 Oct 2026, supplied by some secondary summaries (unconfirmed) (live rate). US visa exemption is assumed (unconfirmed).
| Step | Time | Cost ARS | Cost USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enter as tourist (stay up to 3 months) | Month 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Criminal record certificate, apostilles, sworn translations | Month 0 to 1 | (unconfirmed) | (unconfirmed) |
| Switch tourist to nomad, Decree 584/2024 art. 1 h) II, 100 UMSM | Month 1 | 100,000 | 63.94 |
| Nomad residence | Up to 180 days | 0 | 0 |
| Extension, art. 1 g) IV, 40 UMSM (file within 10 days before expiry) | About month 7 | 40,000 | 25.58 |
| CDI for a bank account (ARCA, form F 663) | Up to 30 business days | 0 | 0 |
| DNM fees, total | About 13 months of stay | 140,000 | 89.52 |
Step by step: 100 UMSM x ARS 1,000 = ARS 100,000; 40 UMSM x ARS 1,000 = ARS 40,000; total ARS 140,000 / 1,563.90 = US$89.52. If the DNM charges line f) II (32 UMSM) for the switch instead, the total is ARS 72,000 (US$46.04) (unconfirmed).
Tax exposure, if the statute were applied to 11 months of pay (US$66,000 = ARS 103,217,400) under the non resident rules for a stay over six months in the fiscal year: 35% x 90% = 31.5% (ITL arts. 102 and 104 i)), so ARS 32,513,481 (US$20,790). No Argentine payer withholds, and no ARCA self assessment route was found (unconfirmed).
Cost to do it: ARS 140,000 (US$89.52) in DNM fees, no capital or deposit, one appointment per step, about 13 months of legal stay (1 tourist month plus 2 x 180 days); certificate, apostille and translation costs extra (unconfirmed).
Practical traps
- Looking for it on RaDEx. The in country application and the extension are in person, not RaDEx. The extension page then says the criminal record certificate is "incorporated into RaDEx", which contradicts that; ask the DNM (unconfirmed).
- Travelling too much. Less than 50% presence in the first 180 days blocks the extension (Disp. 758/2022 art. 3 d)).
- Missing the window. Transitory extensions and changes must be filed within the 10 days before expiry (DNM residences FAQ, q. 22).
FAQ
Is there a minimum income? No. Disposition 758/2022 sets none. You prove the activity at the start and income received at extension (art. 3 b)).
What changed in 2025 and 2026? Nothing in Disposition 758/2022. DNU 366/2025 (BO 29 May 2025) added a health insurance sworn statement at entry (Law 25.871 art. 34), enforceable only once regulated (art. 123 bis); no regulation was found (unconfirmed). DNU 681/2026 added new refusal grounds. Congressional status unchecked (unconfirmed).
Do I need health insurance? Not as a listed requirement, but national public facilities charge non permanent residents for routine care without it (Law 25.871 art. 8).
Can I open a bank account? Yes, with a free CDI from ARCA (form F 663, passport); up to 30 administrative business days for non residents (ARCA CDI page).
Does it lead to permanent residence? No. It is a transitory residence, which builds no time toward permanence.
